Riot Responds to Cheating Allegations and 2x IP after Finals

Posted on at 6:15 PM by Seranaya
A post by Redbeard has just surfaced on the forums in regards to the World Playoffs and the cheating allegations.
Continue reading for a short description of what he said and links to the post, a tentative date on the replays, and details on the compensation Riot is offering up to Summoners..

Redbeard, the VP of eSports at Riot, recently took to the forums to discuss what happened yesterday at the World Playoffs. The post is quite lengthy, so here is a brief overview.

Starting off, he acknowledged the harsh accusations of cheating and assured us that the mini map being visible will be rectified in the future.
"After two days of smooth sailing during the World Playoffs, Day 3 was disappointing. We’ve spent today investigating and reviewing the problems, and I’d like to go through and address some of the community’s big concerns surrounding yesterday’s issues.
In hindsight, the potential visibility of minimap screens for players was a mistake. Despite on-site referees, close monitoring of player cams backstage, and stage design that ensured players would have to turn more than 90 degrees to be able to catch a glimpse of the minimaps, even the possibility of unfair play was simply unacceptable. We’re taking steps to ensure the minimap screens are not visible to players."
In regards to the cheating and the outages, here's a short recap of what was said about each match and some over all problems.
" TSM vs Azubu Frost
  • Azubu Frost had microphone issues, which is why the game was paused.
  • Both teams shifted bodies towards the mini maps, warnings were given to both teams.
  • No other incidents during the match were seen.
World Elite vs Counter Logic Gaming Europe
  • One player from WE was not facing forward during a game.
  • They're looking through the footage but it's not currently seen as a mini map peek.
Other Issues
The outages during the matches that had to be restarted in the CLG.eu/WE games were caused by 1 power failure and 2 internet connectivity issues.
They're currently focusing on getting the scheduling down for the rest of the matches before the World Finals on October 13th"
In closing, Redbeard said:
"We’re trying to deliver an extraordinary experience for viewers, and yesterday didn’t live up to our goals. We’re going to take everything we’ve learned from the Playoffs and strive to make the remainder of the Quarter- and Semifinals, as well as the Finals, as great as we can make them.

In the long run, looking to season 3 and beyond, we’re always learning and we’re reading all your feedback and taking it to heart. We believe the most important concern here is about fairness, and we’re going to do everything we can to preserve that moving forward.

League of Legends as an eSport is young, and we’re learning a lot with each event. This is the run-up to our Super Bowl, and we’ve really been pouring our blood, sweat and tears into it. We’re as disappointed as you are that yesterday had so many issues, but we’re committed to improving, so that’s what we’re going to try to do."

At least we have a post from a rioter, Redbeard at that, that shows they are looking into the situation. If you haven't seen the photos, these are the ones currently in question:
Dyrus with his head turned after the pause during the TSM vs Azubu Frost match
Azubu Frost with a players head turned during the game
World Elite player with his head turned during the CLG.eu/WE match
Redbeard posted shortly after with this comment about when the games will be finished out between CLG.eu and World Elite along with the semi-finals:
"That is still being determined, but we are aiming for Wednesday as the makeup date. Please know these events require a lot of setup and configuration, so the exact day is still in flux."

Furthermore, Redbeard established that player will be recieving a double IP day on the 14th of October, the day after the S2 World Championship Finals.
"We know the issues during the World Playoffs yesterday sucked. It was frustrating for everyone watching at home, and we feel that frustration. We’re taking everything we’ve learned from yesterday to make the conclusion of the Playoffs and the World Finals next Saturday as great as they can possibly be.

As a token of our thanks for your tremendous patience and dedication, we’re going to be giving out double IP for 24 hours after Finals, starting midnight PST on Sunday, October 14th.

Details on the conclusion of the playoffs are coming together and will be announced in the near future. Thanks for understanding!"

    1. Would you cheat if you could could get money for it and not get caught.

This is a issue that extends beyond more then one team vs another.

      And FYI I'm for Curse.

    2. yeah, we are talking about 2 million dollars

i would say, it is more or less riots fault to build the stage in that way

      Delete
    3. It is an issue of the stage setup as well as sportsmanship.

Just because you can use steroids and not get caught does not mean that you should.

In this case there is a pending factor of if Frost did cheat or not but everything does seem to show they likely did get information they should not have and exploited it.

    5. Really?? they have them more or less RIGHT IN FRONT of the mini map showing both teams??

wow, would have expected them to be in like closed off rooms or something.

    6. ITs riot fault for building such false set. What can improve this situation? make a tiny room for each team to play so they can't peak at the big screen.

    7. That was just pathetic how they had to cheat to win and, really, stop being morons and blaming Riot for this. If someone leaves steroids next to you right before a fight or a race, do you blame the person that left it there or do you blame the athlete that used it?

    9. people are getting stupid... really... if you apply real world physics in that scenario, you would notice that the minimap screens are lifted on rafters placed roughly 1m or more above the main screen, and from that angle of AF, you probably would not see much as a high contrast screen... if you can't understand this try looking at your computer screen from a 45 degree angle from the side, you would notice at increase in contrast thus reducing visibility... and with that distance, would you really see anything? unless his glasses can see things far away... really people...

u blame both obviously >.> but looking as riot says "both teams got warnings 4 looking at the screen" i blame riot 4 the ppl beeing abel 2 look at the screen in the first place and who gives a fk about a warning if there is so mush cash on the line?

    12. correct me if i am wrong but because the mini map is on the left for both screens is it not only visible from the red side? meaning TSM getting a warning would not make much sense considering it would not be visible

  2. While I understand that AF deserved the win and that TSM knows this and accepts it, I don't find Redbeard's explanation of what happened in the TSM v AF game sufficient. It is clearly evident that AF looked at the map while it was still portraying the mini map, as oppossed to TSM looking at the map while it was black, during the pause. You can tell as AF pinged RIGHT where Xpecial was when they had no vision of them at the time.

At least Dyrus admitted to looking while it was black, I haven't seen anything from AF yet and I'm dissapointed in the explanation Redbeard gave.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. So the question is: How could Dyrus know the screen was black? Did somebody tell him or did he try to cheat as well and just wasn't succesful?

    3. still he tried to cheat first... fcking cheater

    4. I'm just surprised everyone's surprised. People have, and always will, cheat in the major leagues because of the prestige and money on the line. No one will ever admit it (at least entirely; Dyrus) because that's just human nature. Just like you're never gonna tell you're boss why you were REALLY late if you just decided to go in late.

tl;dr people will always cheat, everyone is at fault here, but RIOT is the least at fault

    5. Dyrus looked up to confirm if the minimap was visible or not. He did this after Chaox spotted someone from AF with their head turned, and while Regi was talking to an employee about it (you can see in the screencap regi is talking to someone). The screen was black at the time and he was only doing it to confirm that the map is visible from the players pov.

Proof: see dyrus reddit ama, regi vlogs

  3. Riot desperately tries not to appear completely idiotic for putting global minimaps within view of players in a multi-million-dollar tournament.

Meanwhile, my 13-year-old self is arguing about screenlooking during a particularly intense game of Goldeneye on the N64.

  4. To be honest, Azubu game wouldn't have changed anyhow you can do best of 10 and azubu would have won 8-9 of them easily, they were much better team overall, even if TSM would have gotten firstblood i doubt results would have been that different, they had the early game on game 2 still lost.

I just hope these things will be prevented on the upcoming venue so there will be no problems.

    2. show nothing impressive? you've gotta be kidding me. Frost is pulled out most of the impresive play in the tourney.

      they came back against IG.

They outplayed TSM individually and strategically. Countered Baron with 2 towers and almost 2 inhibi.
and they caught up agaist TSM game 2 after following on kill and gold for so long as well.

      r u mad tsm fanboy?

      Delete
    3. TSM's whole strategy revolved around early game where getting that kill was a big part of it.

      Delete
    4. If you can't adapt, how do you call youself pro?

Also, they get first kill in game2, then what? Still lost.

      Delete
    5. True they wounldn't change the outcome but that's because of the picks and bans, maybe TSM had a better early game with first blood. But then they had to finish fast, because we all saw that AF had huge poke and TSM had like nothing for poking the only choice they had was iniciating... the only way to iniciate was to flash and w with karthus and then hopefully getting AD or AP carry cause in a straght 5v5 TSM team composition was better...

They should've just blocked off the big screen and the pros on the stage...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Korea does that. NA too cheap.

      Delete
    2. Soundproof are really expensive, Being an audio engineer I can easily say soundproofing a studio is where 75% of your money is going. It requires the whole entire encasing of the room to be covered with cinderblock and sand. Then you must actually create a box encasing of the outbound wires. Also you have to spend money on venting the air and if your going to have windows for the crowd to see its never going to get absolute sound proof. Its too complicated, Too costly and would require the live audience to be watching the players on a screen which just kills the whole live mood. Just remove the screens in viewing distance and work with noise cancelling headphones. The only thing they would be able to hear is a slightly muffled crowd and a very low amplitude.

      Delete
    3. This. And maybe place the screens directly OVER the players heads so they cant see them? Simple really, dont give anyone an oportunity to cheat and everyone is happy. By the way, noise cancelling headphones work awesomely. They would still hear because of the mics, but loads better than nothing
I mean its not like it would be too hard to make a stage. High schools can manage setting up a thought out stage, i think a 2 million dollar prize pool competition should do fine

      Delete
    4. Even better, have the screens so they're behind the players. By behind I mean, the players are turned 180 degrees away from the screen and audience, and noise cancelling headphones. It would be so obvious, if you tried to get a sneak peek and if you did, all you'd get is the back of the screen. problem solved.

The fairest fight would be one where all they can see is the computer screen in front of them and they can hear the game. That's it.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Dyrus was looking only when Regi was telling one of the guys about how you could see the minimap so he was checking what was going on.

    ReplyDelete
  15. From what I heard AF looked at the map and pinged a warning, AF mic issues, game paused (screen gets blacked out), Dyrus looks at the map (apparently to see if AF could see them) while Regi wants to get a restart. Not saying what I believe just what I heard.

Either way, AF looked during the game and pinged while Dyrus looked while it was paused and blacked out, I think there's a big difference. Not that it really mattered.

But then again there's that whole butterfly effect doohicky thing.

  16. Yeah what the fuck... 2 million dollars prize pool and this shitty stage, in a game the narrators had to lower their voice so the players wouldn't listen to what they were saying (this happens if it's too silent)... not to say the server issues... what the fuck Riot, why do I even spend my money with skins if you won't take this seriously!

    ReplyDelete
  17. about the ping & AF player turned head to the screen, i don't see any game changer situation there.. AF players were all scattered, and took about 15-20sec to gathered (if they planned something) while within 15-20sec TSM could be anywhere.
even with or without looking @ mini map, i think AF deserve the win because they're more solid team and have better teamwork and focus.

i Watched all AF game, in some games AF getting killed early giving enemy 1st blood, and some game AF enemy doing pretty well, but somehow AF could turn the tide.. solid teamwork and good focus win the game not turning the head to the screen.. lol..

The thing is that the allegations of cheating were confirmed by actual Riot staff that worked the venue, and not made up by players with a bad case of the post-game rages. If both teams were caught in the act then they should both be called out and punished.

The phrase "TSM fan boys" kind of baffles my mind. The majority of TSM is absolutely insufferable, I didn't think there they had that many die hard fans.

  32. It's all a little bit daft really. Sure, Riot probably could've designed the stage a little better to avoid the temptation of cheating. Similarly, most of the teams that have so far competed have managed to avoid that temptation. In my opinion it's all being blown a little bit out of proportion. Whether they did or they didn't cheat, it's not up to you and it's not your call to make. I'm sure none of you know the full story and all the details, or even the POV from where they were seated, so you can't make a completely informed decision as to what exactly happened. You just have to trust that Riot can. It's their tournament at the end of the day.

So chill the hell down everybody.

Also, no-one complain about 'steroids' and cheating. Sure if a player cheats that is bad sportsmanship, it's wrong. It's not helpful however to dangle a cheat right in front of them, in such a high pressure situation. The temptation to not fail is pretty high especially with how many comments you all post with 'X team disapointing, so crap this tournament, complainmore, used to be good, stuff like that', and not everyone will have the integrity to stay clean with such pressure from fans AND for the prize.

the best solution would be to have them in separate rooms, but if they wanted them on stage that badly, it wouldn't have been hard to do SOMETHING more.

putting the players behind the screens, or even simply boxing off the computer play area so that only the front is opened for the crowd to see the players would have been much better than the setup they had.

"people are getting stupid... really... if you apply real world physics in that scenario, you would notice that the minimap screens are lifted on rafters placed roughly 1m or more above the main screen, and from that angle of AF, you probably would not see much as a high contrast screen... if you can't understand this try looking at your computer screen from a 45 degree angle from the side, you would notice at increase in contrast thus reducing visibility... and with that distance, would you really see anything? unless his glasses can see things far away... really people..."

  49. Does anyone else think it is increadibly stupid to have the players in the open right next to the big ass screen where everything is displayed? They should seperate both teams from visiblity %100 no matter where they look from the main display for viewers and from the other team. If they had used a single smart bit of logic, riot would have done this. But nope, stupid move, If I was one of the competitors I would refuse to play until that glaringly obvious issue was fixed.

  50. all they need to do is move the main stage tv a little closer to the audience, where the main stage tv blocks off team A and B from looking over to the other side. +1 for solution

  53. Blame riot, just put TSM and Azubu into a save room where they cannot see each
other, then the whole problem of cheating is solved

  55. Korean who's not pro :POctober 9, 2012 at 3:42 PM

Im korean so obviously i was rooting for frost. However i think the member did look at the minimap and pinged what he saw. I'm very disappointed that he did do that but i think it would'nt have made a difference. Im not hating on TSM but i think Frost was better that game and they deserved to win. I really think azubu should not have looked it kind of made me sad that he did that. I hope it wasnt Cloud templar hes my favorite. Anyways lets actually discuss this instead of arguing about who cheated, blaming riot (Even though i think they could've added more safety precautions) and just raging. I hope i dont get flamed for writing this but we should all discuss this instead of raging.

  56. AF isnt a bad team and i am not a Korean nor XYZ type of player thing is when someone is caught cheating normaly you a) Disqualify them b) Rectify the behavior by giving a warning or restart the game c) Give a second chance to the team that was wronged. Now none of this happened no one of Riot came forth to set the score straight even if it was an error from the player Riot should have done something about it because yes it is there stage and crap that where set wrong.

TSM was the best team in NA i really doubt AF though they were piece of cake but that minimap thing might have changed the whole game and some of us will agree it might have costed the game who knows ? Facts remains someone cheated or didnt follow the rules ... The end like it or not facts are facts
