"This doesn't really fit in with her thematically, and it's too much. We'll be removing it."Continue reading for most posts on why it is being changed, what might replace it, and more information about this festive situation.

Morello, being the forum flame tank he is, took to the forums to defend Volibar's previous statement and respond to the outrage of many frustrated summoners:
"I need to be clear about something here: the reason we're removing it (and make no mistake, we are) is because there's a lot of places where we're happy to do that, as you guys have noticed, but this skin was not the right place for this sort of thing.
Nidalee has a spear, easily a pole. She's also generally closely related to "hot night elf chick" and has some innate *** appeal to her - pole dance is awesome here.
Katarina in Reindeer ears with a pole dance is just off. It's not about right and wrong, it's not about sensitivity, it's about "what makes sense with this content?"
If you want to think there's some PC police that guide our hand, I can't stop you, but do a quick search on our thoughts to the contrary of this (go look in the spider queen or Nami threads) you'll find that we normally go forward with it when we believe it's the right choice for the champ or skin. In this case, it's just not."
To further clarify this point, he gave the example:
"The skin doesn't have to be thematically consistent to the character.Whilst continuing to fight off unhappy summoners, Morello elaborated further giving a better example of why this sort of thing works better on other champs and explaining how this clearly isn't a censorship attitude:
Elements of a skin need to be consistent to the theme of the skin.
If Bewitching Nidalee threw Christmas Trees, we'd remove that too."
"Let me slow down and give you a more nuanced explanation here (I tend to get caught up in the rapid-fire of volume posts coming in and post too quickly to fully communicate the intended thought):To finish things off, Morello also mentioned that there is still time to add in a NEW recall animation for this particular Katarina skin, saying:
Let's take a look at two sexy female champions, using their bases as an example: Miss Fortune and Katarina.
Miss Fortune Over-the-top pirate hunter. Outwardly sexualized to a point of character definition. "****ty" personality, "hot girl."
Katarina Deadly, sadistic dagger assassin. Sleek, quick and deadly. Shows cleavage and midriff to make attractive, but not seductive personality-wise. Keeps it sleek and quick - not a lot of adornment.
These characters are both really sexy from a proportions and clothing standpoint (equally so in a lot of ways). However, Miss Fortune's base should blast you with sexuality and never conserve on it - it's important to everything she is designed to be.
Katarina is generally sexy as an aside, not as a primary motivator. She's a cool assassin either way, having her be hot just makes her generally more visually appealing. Sexiness is secondary to cool.
You can do the same thin on Kitty Kat Katarina and the Christmas Katarina skin. Kitty Kat Kat is "that ****ty costume on Halloween" start to finish. Christmas Kat uses more Christmas tropes overall, and that tends to be the theme - it has sexiness because Katarina is sexy overall, but it's a secondary theme. High Command Katarina is the same in this regard (though more serious).
We may disagree, and that's OK, but this is the evaluation type we're talking about here. Maybe we sold "sexy" more than intended, maybe it's the read from the animation itself overall, but it's secondary to the character - not primary. Sexuality is more primary on Nidalee too (which is why we didn't change her pole dance on the rework)."

In a lot of people's eyes you removed value JUST by doing this. You better make something up that's damn good, even better than this to get people excited for this skin again. Hopefully Riot learns from this.
I still feel as if they wouldn't have changed it if the members of the community made a big fuss out of it.

ReplyDeleteErrr, shes not a pirate, Katarinas actually the daughter of one of the most revered Generals, General Du Couteau of the Noxian High Command. So she kind of does need to act with some sophistication. Shes an assasin who just murders people, not a bounty hunter like Miss Fortune who hunts people for money and uses her charm to get her way around.

Lore-wise it makes sense to remove it, I thought people got skins for the part that you see most of it - that being abilities and the outfit itself, recall animations to me from skins are that persuading compared to how different the abilities and champion look compared to their normal skin. So frankly I'm niether angry, nor cockblocked by this, which might not be the case for the YouTube community ¬_¬

ReplyDeleteSo since it was a fanservice skin anyway, they could have left it that way. The animation was nicely done, it'S sad it will be gone. Someone proposed giving it Candy MF, which I think is a great idea.
Anyway, I don't like fanservice skins, especially this one sine it just looks ugly and cheap, so I don't mind what happens to it.

ReplyDeleteIt is a politics thing, the recall animation GOT ANIMATED, that means it went through a conceptualization period and a creation of movement period and the finished product and during all that time they didn't stop and say 'this isnt right' they threw it on the pbe and the reactions to it changed their mind. all this talk is just public relations and community backlash control.

I can definitely see Leblanc doing it though. Maybe with her passive for double the fun. Personally, I don't like Kat's skin. Not for the recall animation cuz I don't really care about that, but I don't like the colors.
ReplyDeleteWell said. The animation was kind of 'over-the-top' and not just a bit. Lore-wise it didn't make sense thematically too. It was just sexy and visual-appealing. That doesn't mean they had to remove it at all like they did though. Especially after it got iterated from the though process to the PBE testing. That just quite didn't make sense.

I dont understand why people are getting so worked up on either side....i understand there is "too far" but ive never seen that in league nor have I seen "not enough". For riot to keep getting crap from people like this is going to hurt the company more then people think. Why would anyone work for a bunch of people who whine and complain about everything and anything. Unfortainetly riot mostly only hears and responds to the negitive feedback. Personaly i dont like where league is going and while i love Riot and the people who work there, dota 2 and Smite are looking better and better :( Im hopeing things change befor it comes to that.

In the end what's wrong with sexy? There's nothing wrong with some eye "candy" while you're playing the game.

ReplyDeletePeople will always play League of Legends because of its unique gameplay, even though it was inspired by DotA, it is easier to play this game rather than the other one. As for all the stupid sexuality wars, I can say that I don't understand what people have against it, maybe the ones that complain about it are people with low self-esteem and they don't like seeing people or even fictional characters that seem to have what they don't, its something like "that looks pretty and I don't, I hate it!" or they simply are fat ugly girls and homosexuals.

You very clearly don't understand, or even read anything about it, if you think that it is all about being "jealous and ugly." Some people just don't want being sexy to be the *only* focus of female champion design and skins-- have it take a backseat once in a while and add some variety. That's what all the reasonable people are saying that take issue with it.

ReplyDeleteSex sells. That's the problem. Riot love to over sexualise female champions just so it sells, i mean look at Nami, she has visual cleavage. If they want to make champions appealing they can do that in so many other ways but no, they need to stick to one small thing big breast model, and keep it that way. Instead of covering up or experimenting, i mean to be honest, i find people like Diana, Riven, Irelia who look much better than the other female champions. They look more bad ass but they're covered up in the splash art. As i'm a female LoL player, i feel strong about this, why is it that a champion designer is commenting about sexualised champions. Do champions need to be sexy in the first place? No, it's a game. There are other places where that can be used an in game that isn't one. It just screams of desperation of how much Riot are trying to sell these female champions by showing more flesh that needs to be shown. Yet us girls don't get barely any eye candy. The Male community get it all, LoL is one big game of fan service. Why is it that they can't experiment They have to make sure every single character must contain an element of sexiness, can't we have one normal female bad ass champion that has nothing to do with being sexy. (Don't get me wrong I'm happy for them to give champs like Miss Fortune all the slutty skins they want because that is who she is, she was quite obviously modeled after Jessica Rabbit. However they make sure they throw in a skin like this for literally every female champion which, for me completely cheapens the roster. It's also rather embarrassing that Riot pander to the members of the community that just want tits and ass all day everyday, it limits creativity and variety anyway.

Halloween costumes for girls tend to, for the most part be incredibly skimpy. During multiple Halloweens over the years I have seen girls wearing essentially the exact same costume as headmistress Fiora. As much as I dislike the skin it fits thematically.
That has nothing to do with this, they removed it because it was too over sexualised, they don't want to admit to it as Riot never want to admit to the fact that they're wrong.

The only reason I can understand for doing so is because it will probably be limited/legacy, so you can show-off it in a few months and make all the cool kids in town jelly.

ReplyDeleteI know Vaynes lore is dark and mysterious. but look at many of the champion skins such as Vandal Vlad. Vlad is supposed to be this...gentlemanly sir. Throw him in leather jacket and spiked boots and thats pretty much the opposite of his character. Vaynes skin kind of makes sense in the idea that her bolts "seek out the heart" of her target for an instant kill. The only way i can see this being disputed is that undead beings are not known for their hearts. And most people who purchased her that I've seen were quite pleased with the skin. Perhaps the seductress part of it was a little much. But thats the entire nature of an opposite skin like that.

If they arent going to make new "non human" female characters without re-using old themes (like a female Ent) which do you really want to play? Nami is a mermaid. Mermaids are known for their seduction. And while League of Legends is enjoyed by both genders, I personally think it isnt their job to appeal to one gender or the other. and frankly I think that League was not created with women in mind. They may have wanted both genders to play. But it wasn't made to politically appeal to women And no one talks about how sexualized some of the male characters are. Look at Tryn. Hes running around with rippling muscles and no shirt on. The only thing that turns people away from that is his personality. What about Jarvan? Hes a prince. What girl doesn't want a prince? Ezreal is like a Shojo Manga main male cast. People arent looking at the characters. Theyre just looking at tits. Thats not fair. All women have tits. What do you want them to do? Though a much, much, MUCH smaller amount of girls dress in slutty Christmas outfits than Halloween ones (at least in the UK). I could under this point argue it isn't AS relevant (considering there is always simply slutty girls who dress in this manner 24/7).

ReplyDeleteOh honestly. I love them describing the nuanced sexiness of the female characters like it matters (I mean I guess I get what Morello's saying, but really?). As a female player, all I see is sexy, sexy, sexy, riven, sexy, sexy, Leona. And even Riven has an overly sexy skin. Talking about variety like it matters is just a tad offensive to female players. The varied sexiness in truth doesn't matter, because the nuances are so small as to not exist. LOL is almost entirely just a big sex pot in any case. A few sexy characters? Makes sense; sexy MF sweet! Sexy everyone? Come on... boys' club much?
ReplyDeleteand what I meant to say before was that technically going by your logic in saying that valentines day is connected to sex and that on halloween is when a bunch of girls wear skimpy outfits then yes it also fits christmas sir (saying I didn't read your post before eh??) because I'll restate that you said that the skins "fit" because of how sex connects and how girls in skimpy outfits connect which also both occurs on christmas which is also a "romantic" time for couples and thussss you're just spouting nonsense by saying this kat skin doesn't go with the stuff... well hmmm I might get the last bit of it wrong but wth.

ReplyDeleteI don't hate "sexy things" and of course I believe they have their place in league however I could count the amount of adult female humanoid champs lacking "sexy" skins on my left hand, extending upon this point is the fact that 90% of the female champs that do have "sexy" skins have more than one skin of this nature so don't even attempt to complain about one aspect of sluttyness being ommited from one "sexy" skin as it is you they pander to for the most part.
At least when they stop trying to earn your money and put something classier out they can churn out a lot of good stuff e.g. the upcoming Vi, Leona and Blackthorn Morgana.
I'm not sure if they pander to you because you are the majority or if it's just because it's the safe option and that sex sells.
