This Week in eSports - We're back with a recap of everything we missed!

Last week we were away in a far away land known as California for World Finals, but this week we're back to get you caught up on all the delicious eSports news from the past few weeks that you may have missed out on!

Competitions


  • [NA/EU] Riot Games and Coke Zero announced a sponsorship in order to form a brand new challenger competition. Though many details are currently unknown, it will run parallel to the LCS season starting in early 2014 and will be broadcast live on lolesports.com. The teams competing will be the top 16 ranked 5's teams. More details can be found on the official announcement page here.

  • [NA] The North American Challenger League (otherwise known as Salty or NACL league) announced that they are holding an 8 week challenger season with 10 invited teams with a $35,000 prize pool. A list of participating teams can be found on the Leaguepedia page. Be sure to check out/follow the stream Monday-Thursday for matches! 

  • [KR] After a brief hiatus from League of Legends (and a strange detour into Mobile Games) WCG 2013 Qualifiers have officially started! However, you won't see any EU or NA LCS teams competing due to restrictions imposed by Riot. More information and stream links can be found on the Leaguepedia page! There's a HUGE amount of teams participating - and qualifiers are occurring nightly so be sure to check them out! 

  • [KR] The online qualifier for OGN Winter begins on October 14th-19th - and the offline qualifier begins on the 21st-25th. Stream link can be found here. Brackets can be found here.

  • [SEA] Garena announced that they would have 2 spots for the 2014 World Championship. The first going to the team that wins the summer season and the second determined by circuit points and a regional final (similar to Korea). The circuit point system introduced also scales, with the later seasons being worth more circuit points (initial season = 400 points for 1st, last season = 800 points for 1st) The full announcement can be read over on their website.


  • [All] Unless you've been living under a rock - you already know that SK Telecom T1 took first place at the Season 3 World Finals. After an impressive 3-0 victory over Royal Club, the newly crowned champions walked away with $1,000,000 while Royal Club received a still impressive $250,000! 

Team News & Roster Changes


  • [NA] Quantic Gaming acquired a new roster which originally included Woong, Prime, Apple, Locodoco, and Gunza. However, Woong left the team shortly after the announcement and the team picked up SuNo. More information can be found from the official announcement and the Leaguepedia page.

  • [NA] Kiwikid was moved to substitute for Team Dignitas. Dignitas will be holding open tryouts for the position - more info can be found here.

  • [NA] Arthelon (mid) and Nydushermain (supportleft To Be DeterminedNydushermain has moved onto the roster of ggLA while Arthelon joined Denial.East briefly but then later rejoined To Be Determined.

  • [NA] heavenTime stepped down as To Be Determined's jungler and was replaced with Brokenshard. More information can be found over on heavenTime's reddit post

  • [NA] The previous roster from ggLA were released (EasyUmashiWappa Chang, Uulum, and Bunny FuuFu) and the team acquired QuasKOR KezBischuotter, and Nydushermain. The full announcement can be read over on reddit.

  • [NA] Curse announced their brand new roster. Pobelter, Aphromoo, Zekent, and IWillDominate join Voyboy on Curse with Saintvicious stepping down to coach. Full announcement for Curse can be read here. Saintvicious's comments on becoming a coach can be read here. Pobelter was kicked from the team due to possible commitment issues, twitter post can be found here. Edit: 10/14 Aphromoo announced he was benched as well. Cop be returning to the main roster to fulfill the AD Carry role. 

  • [NA] Curse also announced their new team - Team LoL Pro. The team consists of Nyjacky, Cop, Cruzerthebruzer, and TrickZ. Full details can be found here. Demunlul will be replacing Cop as he moved to the main Curse roster.

  • [KR] Two new teams formed out in Korea - Optimus Prime and Sentinel Prime (which consists of 11 members currently - Grr, Hanlabong, and Manny [top] - redKong and Dayob [jungle] - Gru and Rex [mid] - ZetNjin and Akin [AD] - Luca and On2TZ [support]). The exact compositions of both teams are still unknown and the coach of the team is the ex-Warcraft 3 Pro  Sweet. Full forum post can be read over on Teamliquid

  • [KR] Cloudtemplar (Jungler for CJ Frost) announced his retirement. His current plans are unknown. A translated interview can be found over on TeamLiquid

  • [KR] MarineKingPrime (a well renowned Starcraft player) announced he was moving from Starcraft to LoL. He will be joining Optimus Prime team as a 6th player. Full announcement can be read here.

  • [KR] SK Telecom T1 - 2 announced their new team roster consisting of MaRin, Beelzehan, Easyhoon, Bang, and Wolf. Full announcement can be read over here.


  • [KR] Maknoon left KT Rolster Arrows. ssumday was moved from KT Rolster Bullets to become the new top laner and KT Bullets added Riris, Renewel, and Most 3 to their roster. Current full rosters can be found over on Leaguepedia.

  • [KR] Maknoon announced that he was joining CJ Entus Frost as a mid laner. Fully translated post over on Team Liquid

  • [SEA] Kaigu left Team Mineski. It's currently unknown what team he will be joining in the future. Twitter.

  • [SEA] Lilballz (Jungler for TPA) announced his retirement after he was banned for a year from Garena tournaments for account sharing. He will still be involved and helping the strategy analyst of TPA/TPS. Untranslated announcement can be found on his facebook.

  • [SEA] KRYONICS joined Singapore Sentinels replacing hyhy in the mid lane.
